🎤 SNYC Youth Awards – Celebrating Our Scouts!
✨ We are proud to share that two of our Scouts, Julio Lucas and Curtis Cedras, were recognised at the SNYC Youth Awards. Julio was awarded 1st Runner Up – Positive Youth Award, while Curtis Cedras was nominated as a representative of his Post-Secondary School, SBSA.
Today, we shine the spotlight on Julio and his inspiring journey 🌟
🎤 Meet Julio Lucas – 1st Runner Up, Positive Youth Award
🔹 Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us about your journey in Scouting?
My name is Julio Lucas, I am 26 years old and I live in Anse Boileau, sub-district Anse Louis. I have been working at SBC for the past seven years.
My journey in Scouting started very early, around P2 (about 5–6 years old), when I was encouraged to join by a friend who was already in Scouting. At that time, my leader was Miss Marianne Amade.
I have gone through all stages of Scouting, from Cub Scout to Rover Scout. There were ups and downs along the way, but I took them all as lessons that guided me throughout my journey.
🔹 How did you feel when you were announced as 1st Runner Up for the Positive Youth Award?
I was very surprised because I knew the other nominees were also making a strong positive impact in the community.
When the result was announced, I felt very happy and proud of myself and what I have achieved through my journey in Scouting.
🔹 What inspired you to get involved in community service and youth development?
What inspired me was the desire to make a positive impact—not only in my community, but also at national and international levels.
I enjoy engaging with other youths and partners who share the same goal: to create positive change and help young people become leaders and active citizens for the next generation.
🔹 What role has Scouting played in shaping who you are today?
Scouting has played a major role in my daily life. It has taught me discipline, independence through life skills, and how to be a strong advocate for youth.
Most importantly, it has shown me the true meaning of leadership and has equipped me with the skills to face life’s challenges.
🔹 Can you share one project or activity you are most proud of?
One project I am particularly proud of is promoting awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals through various Scouting initiatives.
🔹 What challenges have you faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?
One of the main challenges has been limited funding and sometimes a shortage of leaders to fully execute activities as planned.
However, even when we are small in numbers, with the support and commitment of each leader, we always manage to make our activities successful.
🔹 What does being a “positive youth” mean to you?
For me, it means understanding that life is not always easy—there won’t always be rainbows and sunshine.
But through dedication, perseverance, and staying focused beyond the challenges, you can achieve what you deserve. And always remember: you may be able to do things alone, but you don’t have to.
🔹 How do you balance your personal life, work, and Scouting activities?
It is not always easy, but I manage with the strong support of my family and the understanding of my workplace and supervisors.
🔹 What message would you like to share with other young people in Seychelles?
Never give up on your dreams. Even the smallest positive impact you make does not go unnoticed.
Keep giving your best—your dedication and hard work will pay off.
🔹 What are your future goals, both in Scouting and personally?
In Scouting, I want to continue empowering young people, helping them develop leadership skills, and exposing them to the fundamentals of Scouting. I also want to continue advocating for the environment.
Personally, I aim to keep making a positive impact in my community whenever the opportunity arises.
🔹 Who has inspired or supported you the most in your journey?
I have been inspired by many people, but special thanks go to all the leaders in Scouting who have played a key role in my journey, as well as my family for their unconditional support.
🔹 What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining the Seychelles Scout Association?
Once you join Scouting, you will never be the same. You will discover many opportunities and initiatives that match your interests.
For me, Scouting is a door opener to achieving your goals.
🌟 We are proud of you, Julio!
