Navigating Paths of Discovery and Growth

Welcome to the About Us page of the Seychelles Scout Association. Our mission is to offer young people the chance to develop their skills and confidence, learn new things, and evolve into responsible citizens.

Embarking on a Century of Adventure, Learning, and Community

In the heart of the pristine Seychelles archipelago, a story of adventure, learning, and community spirit unfolds – the story of the Seychelles Scouts Association (SSA). From humble beginnings to a beacon of youth development, our journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of scouting.

The Beginning of a Movement

In the heart of the lush islands of Seychelles, a dream was planted in 1927 – a dream that would grow into a movement, touching the lives of countless young people across the nation.

A Visionary’s Initiative

The Inception: Our journey began with the vision of Mr. S.B. Deburgh Edwards, a legal officer in the British Colonial Government. Recognizing the potential in the youth of Seychelles, he introduced Scouting, an idea that promised to shape character, foster camaraderie, and instill a sense of adventure in the hearts of young people.

Early Struggles and Triumphs

  • Initial Flourishing: The idea took root quickly, resonating with the youth who eagerly embraced the Scouting spirit. Scouting began to flourish, initially in schools and churches, becoming a beacon of hope and growth for many.
  • A Challenge of Continuity: But the path wasn’t always smooth. With Mr. Edwards’ departure to Mauritius, the movement faced a period of uncertainty. The flame of Scouting flickered in the winds of change but never went out.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

A Testament to Tenacity: It was the resilience and tenacity of the community that kept the dream alive. In 1937, the Roman Catholic Church and Anglican Schools took the mantle, reviving Scouting. This revival wasn’t just about continuing an activity; it was a rekindling of a commitment to empower the youth, to mold them into responsible, compassionate, and capable citizens.

The Spirit of Scouting Persists

Undying Spirit: Despite the challenges, the spirit of Scouting in Seychelles never waned. It lived on in the hearts of those it had touched, waiting for the moment to rise again. And rise it did, as the seeds planted back in 1927 continued to grow, branching out to reach more and more young people.

Rebirth and Inclusivity

A New Dawn for Scouting

  • The Revival: In the early 1990s, as Seychelles embraced the winds of political change and the advent of the third Republic, the Scouting flame, which had flickered quietly in the hearts of former scouts, was rekindled. In 1994, a group of dedicated individuals, fueled by their enduring love for Scouting, re-registered the Seychelles Scouts Association.
  • Embracing Inclusivity: This wasn’t just a revival; it was a transformation. For the first time, the doors of Scouting were opened wide to welcome both boys and girls. This pivotal change marked a significant step towards inclusivity, reflecting the evolving spirit of our society.

The Spirit of Equality and Growth

A Movement for All: The SSA’s commitment to inclusivity went beyond gender. It became a space where young people from all walks of life could come together to learn, grow, and serve their community. This inclusive approach enriched the Scouting experience, bringing diverse perspectives and strengths together.

Building on a Legacy

Continuing the Legacy: The rebirth of the SSA was more than just a continuation of a tradition; it was an evolution. With new programs, activities, and a focus on holistic development, Scouting in Seychelles was poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s youth.

Our Commitment to the Future

Looking Forward: Today, as we reflect on our journey, we see a vibrant, inclusive community that stands testament to our resilience and adaptability. The SSA continues to evolve, embracing new ideas and challenges, always with an eye towards creating a better world for all.

Today’s Scouts: Agents of Change

In the heart of the vibrant Seychelles community, today’s scouts stand as beacons of change and hope. Embracing the legacy of our past, they forge a path of impact, innovation, and leadership.

Our Mission

At the heart of every activity, every campfire, and every badge earned, lies our mission – a beacon that guides the Seychelles Scouts Association in every endeavor. It’s a mission that transcends beyond mere activities, embedding itself into the very lives of our scouts.

Educating for Life

  • Comprehensive Development: Our mission is to develop young people in achieving their full physical, mental, intellectual, social, and spiritual potentials. As scouts, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, learning not just about the world around them, but also about themselves.
  • Character and Skills: We are committed to forming character, nurturing values, and building skills. Scouting is about preparing our youth to be responsible citizens, equipped with the qualities of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, and integrity.

Contributing to Society

Role in the Community: Beyond the personal growth of our members, our mission encompasses playing a constructive role in society. Scouts are encouraged to engage in community service, contributing positively to the world around them, and promoting a culture of peace and understanding.

Embracing the Scout Method

  • Learning by Doing: Our approach is centered on the Scout Method – learning by doing. This method fosters a sense of adventure and curiosity, encouraging scouts to explore, experiment, and learn in a supportive, hands-on environment.
  • Scout Promise and Law: The foundation of our mission is also built upon the Scout Promise and Law, guiding principles that instill a sense of duty and morality in our scouts, shaping them into well-rounded individuals.

Looking Forward

Future Aspirations: As we look to the future, our mission remains steadfast – to continually inspire, educate, and empower our youth. We are dedicated to adapting and evolving, ensuring that scouting in Seychelles remains a dynamic, impactful force for good in the lives of our young people.
