The Seychelles Scouts Association (SSA) has always been at the forefront of empowering young minds and contributing positively to our community. On the 14th of October, 2023, in a heartwarming display of community service and skill development, our scouts embarked on a gardening project at the Foyer de la Providence, adjacent to the St Elizabeth Convent/Cathedral. This initiative, conducted in partnership with the Support Programmes Section of the Social Affairs Department, aimed at reinforcing psychosocial support systems for children living in Care Homes through empowerment and life skills development programmes.

The Essence of Our Activity

The core of this activity was not just about planting seeds or tending gardens. It was about planting the seeds of hope, care, and mutual respect. Our scouts, under the liaison of Mrs. Gina Adelaide, Principal Programme Development Officer, came together to create a small but vibrant garden of fruits and vegetables. This garden serves dual purposes: providing fresh produce for the home’s consumption and generating income as productivity grows.

Why Gardening?

Gardening is more than just an outdoor activity. It’s a therapeutic process that teaches patience, responsibility, and the cycle of life. Through this gardening initiative, our scouts got the opportunity to learn about sustainable living, environmental stewardship, and the joys of nurturing growth. The act of caring for plants mirrors the care and support our scouts extend to the community, embodying the values we hold dear in scouting.

Building Relationships

One of our primary goals was to grow our relationship with the Care Home and its residents. Gardening alongside the children of the home allowed our scouts to interact, share stories, and learn from each other. This interaction fostered a sense of community, empathy, and understanding, which are crucial traits for today’s youth. It was heartening to see our scouts engage in meaningful conversations, bridging gaps and building lasting connections.

The Impact

The impact of this initiative goes beyond the physical garden. The skills and values imbibed through this activity are lifelong. Our scouts learned about responsibility, as they understood that the plants they nurtured required regular care. They also gained insights into the economics of running a garden, which can be a sustainable source of income. But, most importantly, they experienced the joy of giving back to the community and making a tangible difference.

Reflections and Takeaways

As the day drew to a close, it was evident that the activity was more than just about gardening. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and the realization that even the smallest actions can have a significant impact. Our scouts left with not just dirty hands but also hearts full of joy and heads full of new knowledge.

Looking Ahead

The gardening project at Foyer de la Providence is just the beginning. We envision this as a stepping stone to more such collaborative efforts that empower, educate, and enrich. The SSA is committed to playing a pivotal role in the lives of our youth and extending our support to the community.
